A world within worlds, within worlds … ad infinitum. Latiff Mohidin's Mindscape is a meditative portal into self-discovery and introspection sluicing in-and-out of time zones of memories: faces, muted voices, glacial movements and respite, in phlegmatic calm. They seem to be boxed in architectural forms like arches and domes. The human mind, a fundamental resource, protean and real, makes for a catalyst of art. Latiff was lulled into two Mindscapes, with the sculptural (assemblage) Langkawi slipped in between. As Albert Einstein had intoned: “The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking.” Painter-printmaker-poet-sculptor Latiff Mohidin hit the world stage when his landmark Pago-Pago Series (1960-1969) was chosen to kick-start Southeast Asian art foray into the West, at the Centre Pompidou in Paris on Feb 28-May 28, 2018. Latiff was awarded a major Retrospective at the National Art Gallery in December 2012 to June 2013. His art studies were at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunst in West Berlin. He was also awarded the John D. Rockefeller III Fellowship to study at Pratt Institute in New York, and the French scholarship to study printmaking at the Atelier Lacouriere-Frelaut in Paris. He also won 2nd Prize (Graphics) in the 1968 Salon Malaysia. In literature, he won the SEA Write Award twice (1984 and 1986) and the Malaysian Literary Awards from 1972 to 1976, and he was also appointed Guest Writer at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka in 1988.
