Long Thien Shih illustrates the colourful blooms of a vanda orchid, which thrives in the warm, tropical regions in Asia. Here, the artist recreates the distinct forms of the orchid composed of the petals and V-shaped leaves through the medium of batik. Long Thien Shih won many awards during his career, including the First Prize, Young Malayan Artists Competition, Kuala Lumpur (1981), Study Awards, Ministry of Culture, France (1985), and Prints Prize - Salon Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (1992). Long Thien Shih won a French government scholarship to study art in 1966 and was enrolled in the internationally renowned printmaking studio Atelier 17, founded by William Stanley Hayter, a prominent figure in British Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. Long was honoured with a retrospective exhibition titled Man Of The Times at National Art Gallery Malaysia in 2014. In 2018, he participated in a group exhibition titled The Art Of Printmaking: Lasting Impressions, which was held at Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur.
