A painter from East Java, Purwanto draws inspiration from a view on a bridge, where he witnessed the crossing over by the masses. The Hope Gate presents a compelling bridge understructure as a metaphor for knowledge – a force that drives the human spirit. For Purwanto, the bridge is reminiscent of a passageway that connects to new ventures and growth. Illustrated here are the portraits of 34 humanists emerging from the dark: Hans Georg Gadamer, Socrates, Thomas Paine, Voltaire, Abraham Maslow, Isaac Asimov, Albert Einstein, Plato, Kurt Vonnegut, Protagoras, Bertrand Russel, Carl Rogers, Jean Paul Sartre, Carl Sagan, John Dewey, Cicero, Edward Said, Erasmus, Ricard Dawkins, Erich Fromm, Gene Roddenberry, Giovanni Battistavica, Israel Shahak, Jacob Bronowski, Philipp Melanchthon, John Raiston Saul, Linda Smith, Michel Demontaigne, Paul Kurtz, Rabelais, Julius Caesar Scaliger, W.T. Haris, Johann Reuchlin, and Werner Jaeger.
