The Peranakans were known for their elegant lifestyle with embroidered attire, cuisine, porcelain, and handicrafts. Nyonya cuisine is one of the finest in the region, conflating flavourful tastes from Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian cultures. In this work, a charming lady is dressed in exquisite clothes and jewellery, enjoying traditional red turtle cake which symbolise wealth and prosperity. Tan Gaik Hoon graduated from the Kuala Lumpur College of Art with a Diploma in Fine Art in 1994. She is a member of the Malaysian Watercolour Society. Gaik Hoon's works can be found in collections in many countries such as Australia, France, Holland, United States, Singapore, Sweden, and Malaysia. Her work had also travelled to Seoul in South Korea where it was exhibited at the 22nd Korea New Art Festival. Apart from that, she was the Consolation Prize winner of the 1993 Competition organised by Kontena Nasional and the Shah Alam Gallery.
