Zhang Hui (张慧) is a renowned female artist whose practice centers on the evolving image of women in modern Chinese society. Drawing inspiration from sources such as Chinese cinema from the 1930s, images from the Cultural Revolution, advertising and fashion magazines, she examines femininity through a contemporary lens. Seeking to capture the modern Beijing woman, Zhang created her signature figure, "Beijing Wawa" (北京娃娃), a character shaped by her own observations and the realities experienced by contemporary Chinese women. This iconic series was exhibited in her 2008 New York solo exhibition, Zhang Hui: Beijing Wawa at Eli Klein Fine Art.
