Passage No. 5 features a captivating interplay of brightly coloured organic shapes standing out against a neutral palette of white and grey. Energetic black scribbles vigorously applied at the background convey movement. Richly layered with forms, this contemplative work contains the artist's signature elements, including expressive gestural marks, playful organic shapes, and intuitive lines across the pictorial space. After graduating from the Mara Institute of Technology in 1973, Dato' Tajuddin Ismail studied at the Art Centre College of Design, Los Angeles (Graphic Design, 1974), Pratt Institute, New York (post-graduate Interior Architecture, 1981; apprenticed to Massimo Vignelli). A Fulbright research fellow (1987), he won the Minor Awards in the National Drawing Competition (1977), the National Graphic Art competition (1978), the Salon Malaysia (1979), and the National Design Council (1994). He retired as Associate Professor of Fine Art and Interior Architecture at Universiti ITM. He then joined Sunway University as Fine Arts Department Associate Professor and Academic Adviser.
