Maria Tjui was one of Indonesia's established female painters, celebrated for her iconic depictions of Balinese culture, landscapes, and everyday life. Her swift, expressive brushwork conveys a sense of movement. Here, Maria captures a coastal scene in Madura with boats moored along the shoreline. Maria Tjui exhibited extensively throughout Indonesia over a career spanning more than five decades. She held her first solo exhibition at Balai Budaya, Jakarta, in 1962 while studying at the Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia.
