The artwork Udang Sebalik Kotak II draws from the Malay proverb ada udang di sebalik batu, which refers to the existence of concealed intentions or motives behind an action. Presented through a satirical visual approach, the work reimagines the individual hidden behind the box as a shrimp (udang). By placing the shrimp within a transparent box, the artwork creates a paradox between visibility and concealment, suggesting that even systems that appear transparent may still harbour hidden interests. Through this imagery, the work invites viewers to reflect on issues of trust, accountability, and integrity in contemporary society. Merging the familiar with the realm of magical imagination, Hisyamuddin Abdullah's paintings often present layered narratives that explore personal, social, and cultural themes. The painting is created in the artist's signature minimal and clean aesthetic. Hisyamuddin Abdullah received his bachelor's degree in Fine Art from UiTM Shah Alam in 2012. In 2013, he had two art residencies, one in Bali, Indonesia, and the other in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His awards include Young Guns Awards Malaysia 2016, and 3rd Winner in Drawing at the Tanjong Heritage National Level Art Competition. In 2014, Hisyamuddin had a solo with Taksu Kuala Lumpur titled "SArKAs" followed by another solo at Taksu Kuala Lumpur titled KOTA(k) MAGIS in July 2021. He has participated in numerous group shows namely #SKULL (2019), Axis By Praxis: Identity In Transition (2018), Human Being (2019), XIX Nineteen (2019) etc at various local galleries. He has participated in international art fairs such as Art Hsinchu 2023 and CIMB Artober. He was selected for residency programs including Studio Pompstraat in Rotterdam to develop his practice.
