Description
Sok Yeng is a Malaysian contemporary artist whose multidisciplinary practice explores Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) through painting and mixed media. Drawing from her family’s 140-year TCM heritage, she reinterprets medicinal herbs, healing tools, and botanical forms as contemporary visual metaphors for balance, wellbeing, and cultural memory. Working primarily with acrylic, she translates traditional TCM knowledge into vibrant compositions that connect cultural heritage with contemporary visual expression.
Her practice reflects the relationship between nature, healing, and everyday rituals, while seeking to present TCM in a more accessible and contemporary visual language. This focus led to her invitation as one of 14 artists to participate in the National Art Gallery Langkawi’s Kem Ilustrasi Botani: Rasa Alam, where she explored botanical subjects through her artistic practice. Sok Yeng’s works have also been featured in exhibitions including Breaking Boundaries, Seni Halus Hati, Sparks Of Change, and Rising Together by RHB Banking Group.
Working primarily with acrylic, I reinterpret medicinal herbs, Chinese medicine cabinets, healing tools, and botanical forms through vibrant colours, organic shapes, and imaginative compositions. I am interested in moving away from the traditionally serious and clinical representations of Chinese medicine, instead creating images that feel approachable, curious, and visually engaging. Through this transformation, I hope to encourage younger audiences to look at TCM not simply as medicine, but as a living cultural heritage containing stories, wisdom, and everyday rituals of care.
A recurring idea within my work is balance, the relationship between opposing forces, environment, structure and organic growth. The ordered grids of Chinese medicine cabinets often contrast with the fluid movement of plants and herbs, reflecting the TCM philosophy that health exists through harmony and interconnectedness.
Through my practice, I seek to create a bridge between inherited knowledge and contemporary life, inviting viewers to discover the poetry, humanity, and relevance within TCM.
