Description
Wong Xiang Yi (b. 1987, Kuala Lumpur) earned her BFA from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (2010) and MFA from Taipei National University of the Arts (2016). Trained in traditional Lingnan ink painting, her practice is shaped by contemporary ink movements and Nihonga. Since returning to Malaysia, she integrates local visual languages — such as batik, local plants and architecture structure — with classical ink techniques to establish a distinct cultural identity.
After living and studying abroad for nearly ten years, returning to Malaysia inspired a strong urge to paint my homeland. I found deep interest in everyday tropical plants, local architectural shapes, and traditional decorative tiles. Incorporating these local elements into my work became a way to establish my sense of cultural identity and belonging.
Created during the pandemic, Divination reflects a longing for inner peace amidst uncertain times. The painting features Frangipani, a common plant found around local households, which symbolizes hope, renewal, and rebirth.
