Description
Mulaika (b. 2003, Kuala Lumpur) is a Malaysian artist whose practice explores time, impermanence, and the human experience of living within a changing world. Working across layered canvases of acrylic and charcoal, she creates abstract landscapes that consider the relationship between the intimate and the vast.
At 16, Mulaika debuted with her solo exhibition A Thousand Days Of Change at the Malaysian National Art Gallery’s Creative Space programme for emerging artist, making her the youngest artist in history to be hosted by the programme. Since then she has had two solo exhibitions: I Know You’re Somewhere So Far (2021) KEN Gallery, Kuala Lumpur and I Remember You (2025) HARTA Gallery, Kuala Lumpur. Mulaika’s work has also been included in numerous group exhibitions and art fairs.
Mulaika has been recognised by Tatler Asia as one of the “4 Female Malaysian Artists to Watch” and was included in DAZED 100 Asia. Her work and practice have been featured across publications including GLAM, The Sun, New Straits Times, Malay Mail, Free Malaysia Today, Bernama, Berita Harian, and Sinar Daily. Mulaika received her LLB from Queen’s University Belfast in 2025. She now lives and works in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
I have always been drawn to the way paintings hold a moment in time. They can preserve something that words cannot. A feeling, a place, a way of seeing the world at a particular point in our lives.
At the centre of my practice is an interest in impermanence. I am drawn to the tension between the briefness of human life and the vastness of the world we exist within. The landscapes in my work are not representations of particular places, but spaces through which I consider our relationship to a world that is constantly shifting.
My studies in environmental law has made me increasingly conscious of the fragility of the present. There is a sense of uncertainty in this, a worry about what is being lost and what may come next, but also a sense of wonder in simply being here, witnessing the change.
