Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal known for his Symbolism chose to represent inner meaning or reality in a hieroglyphics of vibrant colours and cryptic signs. This was used as the exhibition poster for Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal’s Ruang exhibition coupled with the lyricism of Muhammad Haji Salleh’s poems at the Islamic Arts Museum in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 19 - Oct 19, 2004. It uses sublimal paintings, playing on ethereal light, colours and simple forms in works such as Tabir Ruang, Langit Dan Bumi, Lailatul Qadr and Antara Bintang Dan Bumi. Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal excelled not only as a painter-sculptor. He was also an abled administrator, curator, writer-critic, educator, designer and caricaturist. He was given a most comprehensive Retrospective in 2009 on top of another Retrospective in 1975 given by the National Art Gallery Kuala Lumpur. The Nanyang Gallery of Art organised his Historical Overview in 1994-1995. Syed Ahmad Jamal was made a ‘Datuk’ and the only visual artist named National Artist Laureate. He had been director of the National Art Gallery and the Asian Cultural Centre, and also principal of the Specialist Teachers Training Institute in Kuala Lumpur. He studied at the Birmingham School of Architecture briefly, and then the Chelsea School of Art, the London University, the School of the Art Institute Chicago and the University of Hawaii. He had been honoured with country awards by the governments of India, the United States, France and Australia. He had done two monumental public sculptures, one in Laman Asean in the Lake Gardens, Kuala Lumpur, and the other, Lunar Peaks, which was torn down by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall.
