Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers Malaysian and Southeast Asian works of art auction will be held on 28 October, featuring 190 lots of outstanding works. The auction will be led by a fine selection of rare works from influential pioneering Singapore artist Liu Kang, Syed Ahmad Jamal Datuk, Abdul Latiff Mohidin, Datuk Ibrahim Hussein, and Dzulkifli Buyong, as well as an array of exciting fresh to market modern and contemporary works by sought after Southeast Asian artists. A special tribute to the late legendary artist Khalil Ibrahim (1934 – 2008) will feature 15 works from the artist’s oeuvre created in different media, subjects and styles spanning from 1962 to 2003. Leading the sale is Liu Kang’s 1955 masterpiece, a rare oil painting from Liu Kang’s important Bali trip, estimate RM 1 million – RM 1.9 million. Liu Kang was a founding member of the Singapore Arts Society and is credited with developing the Nanyang style of painting. In 1952, Liu Kang visited Bali with 3 artist’s friends and was deeply inspired by the landscape, culture and society of Bali. Painted on canvas, the work features a group of female bathers executed with exquisite brushstrokes and emphasized the luminosity of the women’s skin and contours of the human form.

Dato’ Mohd Hoessein Enas’s portrait of a lady painted in 1976 will be offered for the first time in auction. Through this piece, the artist coveys the softness of the lady’s features, and beautiful contours of the face are painted delicately in luminous and fresh colours.

Ibrahim Hussein’s 1982 paper work and editioned lithograph print Dance of Joy 1985 will be offered in this sale. The artist’s signature style, composed from a system of intricate lines is evident in these works.

In the Nanyang category, Chatting Under Banana Leaves is a high quality landscape by Kuo Ju Ping. Chia Yu Chian’s early 1956 work depicting a traditional village scene will also be featured in the sale.

Abstract masterpieces include Awang Damit Ahmad's highly sought after Essence of Culture Series dated 1993 and a contemplative work from the Marista Series dated 1996. Jolly Koh’s painting executed with gestural brushstrokes dated 2001 is featured.

The batik segment features an iconic work from Dato’ Chuah Thean Teng. Hailing from a private collection in Singapore, Chuah Thean Teng's magnificent batik titled Two of A Kind, c. 1965-1968 will be presented in the sale. A refined work by Ismail Mat Hussin dated 2004 is also presented.

Contemporary art is well represented, with many cutting edge works reflecting on the social and political turmoil of our times. Samsudin Wahab’s The 5th Anniversay and Powerless reflects with humour contemporary issues in society. Ahmad Fuad’s early work Waris 1997 reflects his concerns for global climate issues. Chong Siew Ying’s Calling and The Shadow Line, as well as Ahmad Zakii Anwar’s Figure at Sunrise shows the artists skillful techniques of portraying the human figure.

Also presented is a special selection of paintings from Indonesia, including an arresting work by Agus Suwage, titled Self Portrait and Co#4, which expresses his interpretation on history and social issues of Indonesia. Other highlights include works by Kartika Affandi, Nyoman Gunarsa, Ida Bagus Putu Purwa and Bob Yudhita Agung.

The sale also introduces works from leading artists in Singapore such as pioneer artist Chen Wen Hsi, Sun Yee, second generation artist Tay Bak Koi and international award winning and multi-disciplinary artist Robert Zhao. One of Singapore's most revered artists, Lim Tze Peng’s work titled Song’s of The Heart is included. Acclaimed watercolourist Ong Kim Seng’s 2008 landscape is also presented. A beautiful work dated 2007 by one of the greatest living artists in Myanmar, U Lun Gwye is featured for the first time at HB Art Auction.

In the emerging artist’s category, exciting works by Sabihis Md Pandi, Fawwaz Sukri, Amy Nazira, Ismail Awi, Shafiq Noordin, Gan Tee Sheng, Najib Bamadhaj, Mohd Al- Khuzairie Ali, Syed Fakaruddin, Nazmi Ismail are available in the sale.
