Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers Malaysian and Southeast Asian works of art auction will be held on 29 April, presenting 181 lots of outstanding works, including figurative scenes, still life, sculpture, abstract and conceptual works by acclaimed artists. Much sought after debut artworks by maestros including Abdul Latiff Mohidin, Datuk Ibrahim Hussein, Khalil Ibrahim, Yusof Ghani, Awang Damit Ahmad, Dzulkifli Buyong, Ahmad Khalid Yusof, Zulkifli Dahalan, Zulkifli Yusoff, Khoo Sui Hoe are offered among many others.
Leading the April sale is Awang Damit Ahmad’s Iraga 'Perjalanan Utara' 2008. Painted with boundless energy on a monumental sized canvas, this work is based on the theme of the North-East Winds, a wind that blows from China to Sabah. This extraordinary work evokes the changing of seasons, which affects the livelihoods of farmers and fishermen. Abdul Latiff Mohidin’s Serangga Series is a tribute to Faust, the 19th century tragic play by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. As well as providing the pictures, Latiff Mohidin is also the translator of Faust. He was inspired to make these drawings while working on the Malay translation. The drawings are rendered in an expressive manner, full of marks and scribbles, and represents an evolution in the artist’s oeuvre. An intricate drawing from Rimba series dated 1995, featuring Latiff’s signature artistic vocabularies is included in the sale. Essential forms drawn from nature are evident in this work, underlying regeneration and continuity as a key essential in nature.
Yusof Ghani’s Siri Tari Kabuki, one of the most interesting works of the artist’s acclaimed Siri Tari series, was painted at the tailend of the reprise on 1991-1993. Inspired by abstract expressionist aesthetics, dynamic shapes are intensely released from the human form, crystalizing movements manifested in dance.
Khalil Ibrahim’s Portrait of a Nude is representative of the artist’s early figurative works. Dated 1965, a pivotal year which the artist had just completed his postgraduate studies at the St Martin’s School of Art and Design in London, this painting is one of the best examples during this period.
Dato’ Mohd Hoessein Enas’s self-portrait will be offered for the first time in auction. In this self-portrait, painted in 1970 when the artist was forty six years of age, we see a man of intensity and steely determination, and in intense contemplation. The features are modelled carefully with fine brushstrokes, and a sense of mystery is evoked with shadows surrounding the face and neck.
Iconic fresh to market works by Yeoh Jin Leng, Jolly Koh, Dato’ Sharifah Fatimah Syed Zubir are amongst the offerings of modern art. Yeoh Jin Leng’s Melawati Series was inspired by the memories of the place during the 1960s, which is a marker of sorts as the Melawati green lung and frontier land was then. An exceptional work by Dato’ Sharifah Fatimah, Celebration 3 is a prime exemplar of the artist’s exploration of abstraction and spirituality.
In the Nanyang category, Khaw Sia, Lee Cheng Yong, Kuo Ju Ping, Tew Nai Tong, Ho Khay Beng are among the highlights. Joget Under Chinese Lanterns, 1972 is a joyous celebration of dance by Khaw Sia, and is a brilliant example of the artists’s observation of figurative works. The artist captures the sensations where the joget is performed under the illumination of Chinese lanterns, a sneak peek into the meeting of cultures.
Heralded as one of Malaysia’s most legendary artists, Datuk Ibrahim Hussein’s paper works dated in the year 1984 is presented. The artist’s signature style, composed from a system of intricate lines is evident in these works.
Another special highlight of the sale features strong contemporary sculptures by Raja Shahriman, Suhaidi Razi, and Chng Huck Theng. Semangat Besi 33 is structured upon the concept of Silat, The Malay martial art and captures their movement, steely determination, and resilient spirit. Suhadi Razi’s Guard, an imposing sculpture, is studded with armour of polished and reforged metal scraps, some kind of medieval knight, albeit with a more futuristic surrealistic touch.
The batik segment will include a refined work by Ismail Mat Hussin dated 2009. Hailing from a private collection in USA, a work by Malaysia’s father of batik art Dato’ Chuah Thean Teng will be offered. M Sukri Derahman’s Market Scene, 2016 will be making its debut in the sale. Khalil Ibrahim’s rare batik work dated 1972 will also be presented. Keng Seng Choo’s Good Harvest and Lee Kian Seng’s The Great Judge of Chinese presenting nostalgic scenes are on offer.
The abstract category is well represented with works by Suzlee Ibrahim, Azman Hilmi, Ng Foo Cheong, Raphael Scott Ahbeng, Nizar Kamal Ariffin, Sabri Salleh and Anthony Sum. Filled with vibrant energy pulses, Suzlee Ibrahim’s Black Line Series No.5 is inspired by the changing seasons. The role of natural landscapes remain an important influence on Suzlee’s development of abstract series, turning impressions of nature into poetic movements of gestures, lines and colour.
